News ReleasesInterlink Becomes the First ISP in the World to Implement Fuel Cell Power TechnologyTORONTO, ONTARIO – Nov 9, 2006 – Interlink Connectivity, a leading provider of collocation and connectivity support to major organizations, today announced the implementation of a hydrogen fuel cell extended run power backup source to power its data centre in Toronto. For Interlink’s requirements, the fuel cell is a key component of the InfraStruXure®, extended run architecture manufactured by American Power Conversion (APC). Interlink faced the challenge of upgrading the extended run power in their data centre which is situated on the fifth floor of an office tower in downtown Toronto. After extensive research into traditional and alternative power generation solutions, Interlink entered an agreement with APC and Hydrogenics, manufacturer of the fuel cell, to purchase this leading edge extended run power solution, the first installation of its kind in North America. “Interlink Connectivity is an Internet Service Provider that prides itself on using innovation to deliver a competitive edge that benefits customers. We needed a backup power system with an extended run-time that would work within our existing building structure,” said Alvin Starr, President, Interlink Connectivity Inc. “The cost of integrating a diesel system into this building was prohibitive due to the building’s age and design and adding that many batteries to our space was also out of the question. APC’s InfraStruXure with Integrated Fuel Cell product offered an excellent option for us so that today we are providing the full-time availability that our customers demand with new technology that is clean, compact, and best of all – reliable.” In addition to providing a scalable and reliable power source this solution
is also environmentally friendly using the ‘green’ technology
of hydrogen fuel cells for the power generation. Hydrogen fuel cells
use hydrogen gas and oxygen from the air to generate power with the only
byproducts being clean water and heat.
